Biography

Dr. Rivera is a health services researcher and a postdoctoral research fellow in HIV epidemiology in the Department of Research & Evaluation. His research interests include studying disparities in chronic health disease outcomes, especially for people with HIV and sexual and gender minority populations.

Before joining Kaiser Permanente in 2022, Dr. Rivera worked on a broad range of health research projects. In the Philippines, he worked as a researcher for the Institute of Health Policy and Development Studies, focusing on the cost and epidemiology of injuries, vaccine cost-effectiveness, and cancer care outcomes. During his graduate training, he worked on projects regarding outcomes of people with HIV in the United States and in Nigeria. For his dissertation, Dr. Rivera used electronic health records from 2 health systems in Chicago to study cardiovascular health of people with HIV. He has a strong background in providing methodologic and statistical support, including the application of causal inference techniques for outcomes research.
