Research with real-world applications

Researchers here work closely with clinicians and health care operational leaders to identify real-world clinical questions and translate findings back into practice. Senior medical group leaders actively support the research program, making this an ideal location to build a satisfying and productive career for those interested in translational research.

Kaiser Permanente’s integrated health system spans outpatient and inpatient settings. In Southern California, that infrastructure connects care for more than 3.7 million members from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Researchers have the benefit of access to the organization’s rich clinical data systems, including Kaiser Permanente HealthConnect®.

Our faculty

The department’s faculty includes more than two dozen full-time research scientists as well as a small group of post-doctoral fellows and associate investigators. Most faculty members have academic backgrounds in epidemiology, behavioral science, health services research, or biostatistics. Some also have clinical training.

Faculty members focus primarily on externally funded public domain research. The program emphasizes translational research studies that have the potential to improve clinical quality and health care affordability. This kind of research is an important element of Kaiser Permanente’s commitment to becoming a learning health care organization.
